Sulphur: Cursed madness

11/03/07  ||  Lord K Philipson

The French label Osmose recently understood that sending albums to GD is a great thing to do since our opinion on shit is all that counts. Sulphur is a (mostly) blackened metal thing with a small twist to it as they throw in some unexpected breaks, keyboards, clean guitar sections and start and stop riffs here and there. I must say it makes them stand above the million other bands with no fucken clue as for what they are doing with their music within this genre.

In case you didn’t know (which you didn’t), Sulphur sounds very fucken Norwegian. I think the reason for that is becoz they are… eh… well.. Norwegian? There’s alot of Zyklon, Immortal and Emperor riffing going on here in the middle of all blasts and typical black metal extravaganza. They aren’t afraid to include quite a few melodies either, which is yet another neat thing about Sulphur. It’s nothing unique, but somehow they have managed to do their own take on shit, and that’s something I always applaud.

There’s a few downsides to this band though; the weak and somewhat irritating shrieks together with a quite thin sound. This would have been so much better with some heavy assed production and awesome growls. The music is definitely there already, make no mistake.

With some serious knob-twiddler for the next album, and another vocalist, Sulphur should be able to get some recognition. These guys are good.

Fans of all mentioned bands in here should definitely lend an ear to this album.

7,5/10.
